We describe concepts that lead to the design of extended grounding structures for the protection of electronic equipment in large as well as small systems. The layout is based on the principle of closed current loops. Among design details presented is the calculation of the transfer impedance of conduits of various shapes. Actual implementation and measurements in HV—substations confirm the correct ness of the concepts
