This paper describes some perceptually relevant characteristics of German intonation. First, the results of an investigation on the specification of 'rise' and 'fall' accentuation are reported. Second, some stylized German pitch contours are presented. These contours -which consist of standardized pitch movements- can be considered to be a perceptually adequate approximation of pitch contours in natural utterances
