Metal halide lamps had the advantage that they used up to 40% of the power for light prodn., and this is about 10 times more than in conventional elec. bulbs. Expts. were performed at the European space agency to study the behavior of metal halide lamps under different gravity conditions. At a gravity of zero the convection inside the lamp was eliminated and the effect of diffusion could be studied undisturbed, and the results could be compared to modeled data. The expts. helped to understand the behavior of the lamp and might help to optimize the light yield from these types of lamps
