This thesis describes the results of a feasibility study on the use of the magnetic semiconductor europium sulfide (EuS) as a so-called "spin filter". A spin filter is a tunnel barrier with a barrier height that depends on the spin orientation of the tunneling electron. A whole myriad of applications exists for such a layer, in particular in the field of spintronics. Spintronics is an extension of current electronics, in which not only the electron charge but also its spin is exploited. This allows for many new applications, such as nonvolatile fast memories and reprogrammable logic, which is a type of electronics that can change functionality if a magnetic field is applied.
