Waking and sleep states are highly complex processes that are elegantly orchestrated by fine‐tuned neurochemical changes, including the neurotransmitters and neuromodulators glutamate, acetylcholine, γ‐amino‐butyric acid, norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, histamine, hypocretin, melanin concentrating hormone, adenosine, and melatonin.
