Experimental evidence in the literature suggests that foil bearing supported rotors can suffer from sub-synchronous vibration. While dry-friction between top foil and bump foil is thought to provide structural damping, sub-synchronous vibration is still an unresolved issue and has been recently attributed to the non-linearity of the bump-foil support stiffness. A non-linear rotordynamic model corroborates this hypothesis, however a forcing is required to excite the system.
