The stereoselective flavoenzyme D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of neutral and polar D-amino acids producing the corresponding α-keto acids, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide. Despite its peculiar and atypical substrates, DAAO is widespread expressed in most eukaryotic organisms.
