Finding a quantum theory of gravity and unifying our description of the fundamental forces in the universe has been a long-standing goal of the physics community for the last several decades. Black holes provide a setting where both gravitational and quantum effects are important, and as such they are valuable in probing how such a theory of quantum gravity must behave; any quantum description of a black hole should be consistent with its macroscopic (low-energy) description in general relativity. The only known examples where the microscopic details of a black hole are understood come from string theory and are heavily reliant on supersymmetry.
