This dissertation examines a number of issues that arise in U.S. Congressional elections. In the first chapter, I look at the source congressional campaign contributions. I show that the source of a campaign contribution is an im- portant factor in determining the effect the contribution has. Specifically I find that individual contributions have a greater impact on election results than corporate contributions. I show that the reason for this difference is that in addition to direct spending effects, individual contributions are also a reflection of a candidate’s quality and thus contain an indirect quality ef- fect. I then use 3SLS to obtain an estimate of all the effects involved with campaign contributions. The results present a better ...
