399 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1999.Drawing on my archival research at MoMA, the Archives of American Art, and the National Archives I analyze the three major historical surveys of American art sent abroad by MoMA during the fifties: 12 Modern American Painters and Sculptors (1953); 50 Ans d'art aux etats-unis (1955); and The New American Painting (1958--59). Together they define a key phase for the history of the International Program, spanning its tentative beginnings through to the breakthrough for American art in Europe.
