Combination of Dietary Tomato and Broccoli Powders Are Effective Growth Inhibitors of Dunning R3327-H Prostate Adenocarcinomas

140 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2007.Tumor growth suppression was associated with reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis, as quantified by Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry and the ApoptagRTM assay, respectively. Utilizing real time polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) and the SYBR Green assay, mRNA was quantified in the liver, prostate, and tumors. Finasteride significantly decreased expression of 5-alpha-reductase-II, Bcl-2, and IL-6 in tumors. IL-6 was reduced in high lycopene and broccoli, P=0.05, and TNF-alpha was lower with low lycopene, P=0.05.
