Seismic Loss Assessment and Mitigation of Critical Urban Infrastructure Systems

157 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2007.This study develops an approach for estimating seismic performance of complex critical urban infrastructures and optimizing seismic retrofit of infrastructure systems based on system-level performance under the constraint of finite resources. First, postearthquake system performance of interdependent or independent infrastructure systems is assessed based on a state-of-the-art network analysis model. Subsequently, a novel optimization algorithm is developed to determine the best retrofit strategy to maximize system performance with a limited budget. The developed methodology is applied to substantial infrastructure systems for seismic loss estimation and mitigation study.
