110 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2006.Nonlinear optical effects on the delay provided by active filters are then discussed. The nonlinear transmittance spectra of a Fabry-Perot amplifier are measured, and the results are accurately predicted using a self-consistent model. The model is then used to predict the corresponding delay spectra for different input signal powers and operating regimes. A microwave photonic phase-shifter is then proposed and demonstrated using wavelength conversion in a distributed-feedback laser. This scheme provides microwave phase shifts greater than 140° over GHz bandwidths, and is relatively insensitive to the input wavelength. Finally, future prospects for tunable delay eleme...
