CHAPITRE 20 - Mondialisation et organisation des navires marchands battant pavillon suédois

International audienceThis chapter emphasises the impact of globalisation on Swedish-flagged merchant ships. To hire low cost crews is synonymous with ships that sail under flags-of-convenience. This phenomenon has also had an impact on the national fleet in many countries. In Sweden, the solution has been to approve a system of temporary employed staff to work on board Swedish-flagged ships. The purpose of this chapter is to show how the global labour market impacts the daily work on board these ships. This chapter is based on ethnographic fieldwork that was conducted on board two Swedish-flagged merchant ships in motion. The ships had mixed ethnic crews from Sweden, the Philippines and Poland. The results show that the ships were stratified by ethnicity, where the Swedish crew was at the top of the organisation. The results also indicated the presence of a conflict regarding how things should be done on board these ships, such as how orders should be delegated and tasks distributed. There is a way that Swedes do things, which is informal, and a way that Filipinos do things, which is formal. This conflict between ways of doing things is interpreted as a consequence of having crews that work under different terms and conditions: while Swedish crews belong to a national labour market, Filipino crews belong to a global labour market.Keywords: Globalization, organization, Swedish merchant shipsMa recherche met l'accent sur l'impact de la mondialisation sur les navires marchands battant pavillon suédois. Au cours des dernières décennies, il a été plus fréquent que les navires battant pavillon suédois naviguent avec des équipages multi-ethniques. L'impact que cela a eu pour l'organisation à bord de ces navires est un sujet qui a été peu étudié. Dans cette présentation, je vais vous montrer quelques-uns des résultats de la recherche que j'ai faite sur les navires battant pavillon suédois avec des équipages multi-ethniques provenant de Suède, des Philippines et d'Europe orientale. La présentation est basée sur le matériel qui a été recueilli au cours d'études de terrain ethnographiques à bord de deux navires marchands. Les résultats montrent que les équipes sont principalement divisées en deux groupes ethniques, les Suédois et les Philippins, et que cela représente des défis pour l'organisation à bord. Ces défis existent en partie en raison de la présence d'un « choc culturel », mais ils montrent également le fait que les équipages travaillent dans des conditions différentes : pendant que les équipes suédoises appartiennent à un marché du travail national, les équipages philippins appartiennent à une main-d'oeuvre du marché mondial.
