Participation is an important keyword in development research and practice. Yet, there is little evidence about the impacts of participatory tools on individuals with regard to the stimulation of motivation for participation. The empirical investigations of this paper give evidence to the impacts of participatory methods on the base of a case study with Indian organic cotton farmers in the context of a Participatory Technology Development (PTD) project in Central India. Selected PTD-tools are assessed through a mix of inquiry methods in order to gather information about the direct effects of PTD-tools on individuals' motivation degrees. The results are discussed against the backdrop of Post-development critiques
