Research sponsored by the "Pro Renovanda Cultura Hungariae" Foundation, through its "Dunatáji Népek Kutatása Szakalapítványa" [Researches on Danube Peoples] - The Enlightenment and the Natíonal Awakening ín Carpathian Ruthenia in the Late 18th - Early 19th Centuries -In his article, the author seeks to answer the question whether French and German Enlightenment had influenced in any sense the Carpathian (Greek Cathohc) Ruthene culture in the 18th and 19th centuries. He attempts to prove that national awakening was a phenomenon different from Enlightenment in Eastern Europe. It developed very slowly in the area and produced, at its beginning, only religious literature. It was only at the first halÍ oÍ the 19th century that the first products of a secularized Ruthenian culture appeared, characteristically mainly in Hungarian
