Estas ondas pueden producirse cuando una capa de líquido contenida dentro de un recipiente es sometida a una oscilación vertical. Los valores críticos de aceleración y número de onda que caracterizan la aparición de estas ondas dependen básicamente de las propiedades fisicoquímicas del fluido utilizado, como así también de aspectos geométricos tales como la forma del recipiente y el espesor de la película líquida.
