Hydraulic Conditions and Benthic Invertebrates in Sandy Bed Fluvial Channels. Hydrodynamic and Morphology Influence of Dunes and Meander Bends

La presente tesis se enmarca dentro de la sub-disciplina eco-hidráulica, considerada como el vínculo interdisciplinario entre la ciencia hidráulica, geomorfológica y ecológica. Estudios eco-hidráulicos en grandes ríos han sido escasamente desarrollados. En este sentido, fue necesario diseñar nuevas metodologías de muestreo basadas en tecnologías acústicas y satelitales. Las dunas y los meandros son estructuras morfo- dinámicas comúnmente presentes en cauces aluviales que influyen significativamente sobre la estructura del flujo y ejercen un fuerte control sobre el transporte y deposición de sedimentos. Respecto al conocimiento de la incidencia de factores morfo- hidrodinámicos sobre la distribución de la fauna de macro-invertebrados bentónicos, éste es completamente inexistente en grandes ríos y escasamente desarrollado en corrientes pequeñas. Esta tesis se realizó sobre una selección de diferentes ríos del hidrosistema del río Paraná, haciendo especial énfasis en el río Paraná Medio y Paraguay Inferior. Por otro lado, se consideró también el estudio de un río europeo de bajo orden, con el objetivo de iniciar la interpretación de los efectos de escala espacial sobre la distribución de los organismos bentónicos considerando las características hidráulicas propias de ríos tan diversos. Adicionalmente, se plantea el dilema evolutivo acerca de cómo los invertebrados bentónicos enfrentan las fuertes corrientes fluviales donde habitan. Finalmente, se logró establecer el grado de incidencia de los parámetros hidráulicos del escurrimiento y morfológicos en la distribución espacial de especies de macro-invertebrados bentónicos.This thesis can be considered into of the eco- hydraulics sub- discipline, which comes from the eco- hydrology scientific discipline. The eco- hydraulics has been considered the interdisciplinary link between hydraulics, geomorphology and ecology science. Eco-hydraulic studies are poorly developed in large rivers. In this sense, it was necessary here to design new sampling methodologists based over a combination of acoustic and satellite technologies. The dunes and meanders are morpho- dynamic structures usualy found it in alluvial channels which influence the flow structure and, therefore, exert strong control over transport and sediment deposition. However, in large rivers has not been achieved yet a clear understanding of the interactions between hydraulic and dunes or meanders. The knowledge of the incidence of morpho- hydrodynamic factors on the distribution of the benthic fauna is null in large rivers and poorly developed in small streams. This thesis was carried out on different rivers in the Paraná River hydro- system, focusing on the Middle Paraná and Lower Paraguay rivers. On the other hand, in order to initiating the interpretation of the effects of spatial scale on the benthic organisms distribution (considering the morpho- hydraulic characteristics), it was also studied a European small river. Additionally, an evolutionary question arises herein: how do benthic invertebrates cope with the strong flows prevailing in large rivers? Finally, was possible to establish the incidence level of the hydraulic and morphological characteristics on the spatial distribution of benthic macro-invertebrates species.Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET
