This thesis analyses the connection between family circumstances and work and educational outcomes of individuals in the family. It consists of a theoretical chapter developing a conceptual framework analysing various factors affecting female labour force participation and two empirical chapters analysing the relationships between family well-being and education and labour market outcomes. The first chapter develops a broad conceptual framework encompassing both supply and demand aspects to explain women’s participation in the labour force. The supply side factors include fertility, partner’s income, potential childcare assistance from extended family members, the youngest child’s age and the female’s age and education.
