Painted Surface will showcase a selection of contemporary painters from across the world, from Australia to the USA, featuring works that expand the definition of painting. A variety of approaches, from experimenting with the medium of paint and canvas to pushing paintings in and out of the frame, offer an unusual perspective on what constitutes contemporary painting in a world of prominent and diversified visual culture. Chosen from more than a hundred submissions, the selected work explores and subverts the traditions of painting. Painted Surface will feature the monumental portraits of Fatma Ummanel, an illuminated landscape triptych by Julian Rowe, and a huge experiential seascape by Anthony Cooke. The exhibition will challenge the viewer's preconceived ideas of painting The opening night will feature a performance, Black Square, by one of the selected artists -Kimvi Nguyen. Kimvi was recently awarded Artist in Residence on Kronstadt (Kotlin Island) by the The Ministry of Culture Of The Russian Federation - National Centre For Contemporary Arts. Uneasy Peace Oil on Canvas 120 x 80 x 5cm MARK PARKINSON Mark Parkinson is an artist working across a range of media including paintings, drawings, print and installations. He has been a working artist since 1997. He works out of Preston, where he currently resides. His practice is reliant on the use of colour and light, juxtaposed with metaphors from urban and constructed landscapes. This is an attempt place down markers within an ever shifting contemporary landscape. Living on inner city estates has heavily influences his work, drawing on experiences, memories and a sense of place, within it notions of working class identity. The imagery in his work is driven by responses to situations and cognition. His latest paintings use geometric shapes and colour to investigate fear, anxiety, stress and the constraints of living within these estates, the memories that taint his past and effect his futur
