This presentation will discuss methodologies that could be adopted in analyzing the reception of early 19th-century landscape painting. It attempts to answer the following two questions: How can we categorize 19th-century viewers’ responses to landscape paintings? And how are these responses related to realism? The discussion will first analyze various modern theories developed to understand realism in painting and then analyze how they help to unfold the reception of painting in the early 19th century
