The process of becoming young adult triad members in Hong Kong

The objective of this study is to examine the process of becoming young adult triad member in Hong Kong. This research is driven by Labelling Theory to determine whether there is label on young adult triad members that initiate and consolidate their formation of deviant identities and lead them to join a triad society. It also seeks to understand the underlying factors that sustain their triad status. Data used in this research were obtained from face-to-face semi-structured interviews with five current young adult triad members in Wong Dai Sin, Hong Kong. This study investigates their process of becoming triad members, starting from their secondary school life through to the present. Within the process, there were special incidents and moments found crucial and decisive in affecting their willingness to join the triad society and three distinctive stages were found.
