Dadja ou l'usine aux champs : industrialisation et émergence du fait urbain au Togo

Is the simple establishment of a factory in a rural area sufficient to create a city ? The example of the textile plant of Dadja (150 km north of Lomé ; with 1 500 workers, deriving from all parts of Togo) shows that the little village has strongly grown (up to a population of 7 000 inhabitants), and the buildings have improved qualitatively like-wise. But this population is not deeply rooted in Dadja : the labourers of the factory do only their daily shoppings here ; they grow large quantities of food for themselves and send all their savings back to there home-town, and even invest there. Therefore, urbanity doesn't exist at Dadja neither with regards to a stable population, nor to the accumulation of capital, nor the development of urban functions. Dadja isn't anymore a village, and isn't yet a city, but represents a third type of human settlement, namely the «camp».Une usine implantée en rase campagne suffit-elle à créer une ville ? L'exemple du complexe textile de Dadja — 150 km au nord de Lomé, 1 500 ouvriers en 1980, venus de tout le Togo — montre que le village a fortement grandi en surface et en population — jusqu'à 7 000 habitants — , et l'habitat nettement progressé en qualité. Mais la population ouvrière ne s'est pas enracinée à Dadja : elle n'y fait que ses achats les plus quotidiens, elle cultive elle-même une bonne partie de son alimentation, elle réexpédie au village d'origine ses économies et ses investissements. Il n'y a donc accumulation sur place ni de population stable, ni de capitaux, ni de fonctions urbaines. Dadja n'est plus un village et n'est pas devenu une ville mais un troisième type d'établissement humain : un «camp».Marguerat Yves.
