Teachart is an intelligent tutoring system whose objective is to teach a student how to develop an Expert System with a design tool. The characteristics of the tutor module of Teachart are described in this paper. Hypothetical reasoning is used to rebuild and analyse the response a student has given concerning a knowledge base creation exercise. This reasoning uses a modal logic based on the notion of possible worlds. Every world relies on a hypothesis and contains an access function which is used to determine which worlds are conceivable from the current world.
