The new towns, located at the outer limits of the Greater Paris area and including both rural and urban communities, have a strong demographic attraction. They are particularly attractive to young couples with small children, who come more from the «départements» (counties) in the outlying suburbs than from the central part of the Greater Paris area. Among them, the middle classes are predominant (French social and professional classifications : 4 = intermediate professions ; 5 = employees) But this is an unstable population, since the new towns represent for many of these people a residential stepping stone rather than a place to settle permanently.
