Whereas certain grammatical tenses in French, such as the present indicative, can be characterised as nondeictic , others are restricted to particular, highly specific uses and meanings, as is the case for the simple past and past anterior, as well as for the simple future and periphrastic future. The specificity of the simple past can be expressed in the following areas : (1) content (aspect) ; (2) syntactic uses ; (3) lexical uses (Aktionsart ) ; (4) registers (spoken, written, etc.) ; (5) stylistic uses ; (6) modal uses.
