Clutch size and nestling survival of the Spanish Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetas homeyeri)

En el presente trabajo, tras exponer diversas teorías sobre la significación del tamaño de la puesta en las aves, y abordar el problema de la eclosión asincrónica y la mortalidad entre los pollos de las Rapaces, se proporciona información acerca del tamaño de la puesta y el promedio de jóvenes volanderos por nido con éxito entre las Aguilas Reales de la Península Ibérica (Aquila chrysaetos homeyeri). Se citan 3 nidos con un huevo, 38 con dos y 1 con tres. La media de 1.95 huevos/nido es sensiblemente igual a la obtenida en otros paises europeos y americanos (Tabla 1), 10 que confirma la hipótesis de Cody, según la cual las especies sometidas a escasa predación tendrían tamaños de puesta muy estables. En cuanto a los aguiluchos, se informa de 27 nidos con uno, 31 con dos y 1 con tres. El índice de 1.56 pollos volanderos por nido con éxito es superior a los citados en el resto de Europa, e igual al de Montana (USA) (Tabla 2). Esta elevada productividad de las Aguilas Reales españolas no puede explicarse por la hipótesis de Wynne-Edwards relativa a la densidad, y tampoco responde a la tendencia latitudinal que hizo notar Lack. Se concluye afirmando que actualmente en España la acumulación de pesticidas en la cadena trófica del Aguila Real no ha afectado aún a su fertilidad, y que tanto el clima como la densidad de presas -especialmente el Conejo (Oryctolagus cuniculus) del que se sabe es una presa óptima por su tamaño, tipo de vida y abundancia, resultan apropiados para una reproducción con éxito.After explaining various theories concerning the significance of clutch size in birds and touching upon the problem of asynchronous hatching and nestling mortality in birds of prey, this paper deals with the clutch size and the average number of fledgling per successful nest of the Golden Eagles of the Iberian Peninsula (Aquila chrysaetos homeyeri). Three nests with one egg, 38 with two and 1 with three eggs were recorded. The average of 1.95 eggs per nest is more-or-less that cited for other European and American countries (Table 1), which confirms Cody's hipothesis that those species undergoing very little predation would show stable clutch sizes. With respect to the eaglets, 27 nest with one, 31 nest with two and 1 with three were recorded. The average of 1.56 fledglings per successful nest is higher than those cited for the rest of Europe and the same as that given for Montana (USA) (Table 2).
