La promoción del transporte público y de modos de transporte no motorizados tiene como objetivo reducir la dependencia del vehículo privado. Muchos estudios, realizados principalmente en países anglosajones, han analizado la posible relación entre la dispersión urbana y el uso de modos de transporte, aunque a escala metropolitana. Sin embargo, la evidencia de esta relación no ha sido suficientemente evaluada en países mediterráneos.
