This research provides a comparison of three types of robotic controllers and their suitability in evolutionary robotics. Two novel systems comprised of lookup tables (LUTs) and evolvable hardware (EHW) based controllers are compared against a benchmark single layered artificial neural network (ANN). The controllers have been evolved using a genetic algorithm (GA) to perform the following robotic navigational tasks: light following, object avoidance and the combined behaviour, light following while avoiding obstacles.
