The development of endoscopic ultrasound was driven by the need to develop less invasive alternatives to surgical and radiologic interventions for a wide variety of gastrointestinal conditions. During the past decade, there has been a very rapid growth in the clinical role and capabilities of endoscopic ultrasound-guided therapeutic interventions.
