Persistent adnexal mass during pregnancy: 5 years experiance

Objective: Recently, adnexal masses has seen more often with using of routine prenatal ultrasonography during pregnancy. We reported our clinical and pathological results about adnexal masses. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Obstetric and Gynecology Department, Mersin University Faculty of Medicine. Patients: Persistent adnexal mass who were diagnosed at 1st trimester of 31 cases. Interventions: Laparatomy for 2nd trimester or term. Main outcome measures: Demographic, clinical data and postoperative histopathologic diagnosis. Results: The incidence of an adnexal mass in all pregnancies was 0,02 % (29/14523). The median age of patients was 32 years (range, 20-41). The median gestational age at which adnexal masses were detected was 34.1 weeks (range, 7-41), and the mean gestational age at the time of surgery was 37 weeks (range, 14-41). Second trimester surgery was performed in 3 patients (10.3%), and time of cesarean delivery in 26 patients (89.7%). Postoperative pathology results of the patients were functional cysts in 9 cases (30%), teratoma in 9 cases (30%), cystadenoma in 6 cases (20%), endometrioma in 2 cases (6.7%), borderline tumor in one case (3,3%), and malignant tumors in 3 cases (10%). Conclusions: Adnexes should be carefully examined with 1st trimester obstetrical USG and indication for surgical operation should be made more carefully
