Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.Fires have been affecting on average half a million hectares of forests, shrubland and crops every year. During the second half of the 20th century with socio economic development people abandoned unproductive land and overpopulated more fertile areas and cities. Landscapes started to be covered with natural vegetation or new plantation, often with highly flammable flora (conifers, olive trees, fruit trees, etc.) causing more frequent fire occurrences.
