An analysis of the combinations of socioprofessional categories, previous places of residence and the types of housing occupied after the 1 982 census shows several kinds of housing strategies and reveals the existence of zones of social aggregation and segregation in the suburban environment. In particular, it can be observed that the total number of recently constructed blocks of flats functions as a temporary stage in the progress of new residents who have become home-owners, and who come chiefly from the Paris metropolitan area, and they are destined especially for the intermediate professions and for employees, much less than for working-class people.
