Lotissements et colonisation : Algérie, 1830-1970

The creation of a network of colonial towns in Algeria corresponded to military objectives at the outset. Military engineers were responsible for the creation of civilian neighbourhoods whose plan they drew up : public space, the allocation of public amenities and space conceded to private building. The distribution of plots which was proposed was rarely respected. Some constraints as well as financial participation were imposed on home owners. The military engineers, concerned with the needs of the colonists actually did the work of town planners, defining the shape of public space and leaving the control of private space to its owners.Là création du réseau de villes coloniales en Algérie répond dans un premier temps à des objectifs militaires. Les ingénieurs militaires sont responsables de la création des quartiers civils dont ils établissent le tracé : espace public, répartition des équipements publics et des espaces concédés aux constructions privées. Le découpage parcellaire proposé sera rarement respecté. Quelques contraintes sont imposées aux propriétaires ainsi qu'une participation financière. Les ingénieurs militaires, soucieux des besoins des colons, réalisent un véritable travail d'urbanistes, définissant la forme de l'espacé public et laissant aux propriétaires la maîtrise de l'espace privé.Picard Aleth.
