The acidification of streamwaters has been investigated in the Vosges Mountains in terms of physico-chemical characteristics and macroinvertebrates communities. A spatial as well as temporal survey of streams has shown that acid waters are charactized by very low alcanity, low pH, low mineralisation and high Al concentrations. In such stream all the major faunistic groups are affected. Molluscs, crustaceans and ephemeroptera have completely disappeared, diptera, trichoptera and coleoptera abundances and richnesses are strongly reduced. Plecoptera richness is lower but this group may be on the most abundant in acid waters.
