This study concludes that the unique performative culture of Malawi, embodied in the Nyau masquerade, is a vital means of communication concerning HIV/AIDS. This form of communication must be understood and utilised more extensively to bring about real changes in the perceptions and behaviour concerning the spread of the disease in Malawi. The Nyau masquerade is a unique ritual that combines political communication, performance, education and entertainment into a ritual that is deeply rooted in the traditional culture of Malawi.
