Identification of the bearer: Religious order emblemHistorical Notice: A Crusader institution par excellence, the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem adopted naturally as its emblem a white cross on a red field (in heraldic terminology Gules a cross argent). Even after the adoption of the eight-pointed cross (Maltese cross) in the 16th c., in most heraldic depictions the simple Greek cross was still used. This particular cross is part of a heraldic ensemble placed on the walls of Kos in 1476. Kos was occupied by the Hospitallers from the beginning of the 14th century to 1522.Notes: Photo Kostis Kallivretakis, 2005Identification of the Coat-of-Arms: Hospitalis Sancti Iohannis Hierosolymitani Conventus MilitesΤαύτιση φορέα του ...
