The present article is devoted to the peculiarities of the portrait in national painting and sculpture in the period of the 1950s. The text refl ects the creation of prominent artists who have realized the most famous portrait works. The author presents examples of representative portraits and they are analysed in the context of the period we refer to. He identifies both the methods, techniques, the ideas and aspiration of plastic artists who have practised portrait art. the presented information is useful to artists and teachers working in the fi eld of visual arts and to students who are interested in portrait painting
