Framework of reading and writing activities on genre-based approach to improve undergraduate learners writing skills at Thailand’s Hatyai University

This paper is a preliminary study of research aiming to provide empirical evidence to support the relationship between reading and writing skills by using a Genre-Based approach. This preliminary study explores how Genre-Based reading and writing activities develop students‟ writing skills. The 16 first-year students have volunteered to explore through the English 1 course by using Genre-Based approach. Recount Genre-Based text is chosen due to the students’ familiarity with the text. The tasks of Recount in the supplementary embrace the stories ranging from the self, relationship to society, and each task has a difference of difficulty to challenge the students to learn. The results illuminate that after using the Recount text materials for 12 weeks, the students developed their writing skills in certain aspects in terms of knowing how to expand more ideas into their writing and being aware of using the past tense when they want to write as a recount text
