Increasingly uncertain climatic conditions threaten the security and stability of agricultural systems (Østergård et al., 2009; Döring et al., 2011) and a better understanding of genotype x environment (GxE) interactions is needed to shift the agricultural focus from manipulating environments to grow crops to creating crops that fit into the environment (Østergård et al., 2009; Lammerts van Bueren et al., 2012).
