Note:Inorganic sulfate is both the end product of sulfur amino acid metabolism and substrate for various biosynthetic sulfoconjugation reactions in the mammal. This thesis describes two methods for measurement of sulfate in small volumes of biological fluids. It also examines the role of the kidney in sulfate homeostasis in vivo. The presence of normal renal handling of sulfate in both human and mouse mutants with a specific disorder of phosphate transport is convincing evidence that the X-linked locus probed by these mutations does not control sulfate homeostasis.
