Note:Alcoholism among North American Indians is usually explained.in termsof biological factors, aboriginal culture or social disorganization. Thisstudy of Native alcohol abuse shows that historical factors and especiallyEuropean colonization and the subsequent dependence of the Native groupson the dominant society should be regarded as the main causes of alcoholism among them. It is argued in this thesis that the transformation of the Native societies into 11 internal colonies11 has perpetuated the pressures toward drinking as well as contributed to the maintenance of the specific Indian drinking patterns, since the latter have been useful to expressdiscontent and hostility toward the larger society.
