Note:During hemostasis platelets change their shape from smooth discoid cells to more spherical, cells with surface projections (pseudopodia) generally called echinocytes. The importance of shape change for platelet coagulant activity was investigated. Recalcification times of platelet rich plasma normally containing discocytes were used to monitor coagulant activity, while echinocytes were formed and maintained by additions of either adenosine diphosphate or serotonin.
