Drugs have been applied to the skin to treat superficial disorders and for cosmetic purposes since ancient times. Although early records suggest that the skin has also been used as a portal of entry for the systemic delivery of drugs, it was not until the latter third of the 20th century that transdermal delivery, particularly through the use of transdermal patches, became a common practice. Today, nearly 20 drugs have been successfully incorporated into transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS) and delivered through the skin to treat general illnesses.
