Introduction

Cultural competence is a multifaceted approach that aims to increase the capacity of health services to provide effective and quality care for socially and culturally diverse population groups. It is a complex concept and practice approach which has been variously defined. In this chapter, we discuss the historical development of cultural competence along with key themes in the definitions of cultural competence and understandings of what it encompasses. We then provide an overview of the purpose and objectives of this book, with a chapter summary to outline what is covered in the following chapters
