The German Creek Formation was formed by deltaic progradation eastward from the western, cratonic margin of the Bowen Basin. The unit was deposited on the lower delta plain and delta front of a mixed-influence delta moulded by fluvial outflow, waves and tides. The Moranbah Coal Measures are partly laterally equivalent to the German Creek Formation, but were derived from the eastern, orogenic margin of the basin. They accumulated in upper delta plain environments that contained large southerly flowing distributary channels. -from Author
