The genesis of the type known as the Javanese mosque, with a concentric pattern and superimposed roofs, common in Java as well as in the Malay world, is open to debate. For some specialists, this architectural type was copied from an early Indian type of mosque. For others, it was developed in Java before Islamisation and adopted for the purpose of the new Muslim faith around the fifteenth century. In continuation of a reflection outlined by some historians and architects, this article proposes to shed more light on the latter hypothesis, on the basis of new archaeological and iconographical sources.
