Le parti républicain dans les Vosges de 1870 à 1914

In the period between 1871 and 1914 the Vosges can be described as a dynamic frontier area where the republican party represents a decisive political force. it is a stream of throught which gathered together all those who agreed with the ideas of the 1789 French revolution and turned into a structured organization at the beginning of the 20th century. after a brief description of the Vosges, this thesis analyses the evolution of the party, using mostly administrative and local newspapers sources. While the republican party had little influence during the Second Empire, after the 1870 war it was transformed into the dominant political force of the department, because it represented both resistance towards the enemy and national recovery. Mostly composed of moderates, it maintained its dominant position until the end of the 19th century. Its leaders, Jules Ferry and Jules Méline, were of national significance. At the end of the 19th century, its all importance was challenged by the surge of nationalism that accompanied the Dreyfus case. But a new republican party, the democratic republican party, emerged and managed to regain the department between 1906 and 1910. On the eve of the 1914 war representing a very moderate left wing, it exerted its political influence just like the republican party at the end of the 19th century.De 1871 à 1914, les Vosges sont un département frontalier et dynamique. Le parti républicain y constitue la force politique dominante. C'est un courant de pensée , qui regroupe tous ceux qui sont attachés à l'héritage de la révolution de 1789 et qui ne se structure qu'au début du XXème siècle. Cette thèse, qui utilise principalement les rapports de l'administration et la presse locale, retrace, après avoir présenté les Vosges, l'évolution de ce parti. Alors qu'il ne bénéficie que d'une influence limitée sous le Second Empire, le parti républicain devient avec la guerre de 1870 la force politiqe prépondérante du département, car il incarne la résistance à l'ennemi et le redressement national. Composé essentiellement de modérés, il garde cette position dominante jusqu'à la fin du XIXème siècle. Ses chefs de file, Jules Ferry et Jules Méline, jouent un rôle national. Au tournant du siècle, sa prépondérance est remise en cause par la montée du nationalisme qui accompagne l'affaire Dreyfus. Mais un nouveau parti républicain, le parti républicain démocratique, se constitue alors et réussit à reconquérir le département entre 1906 et 1910. A la veille de la guerre de 1914, représentant une gauche très modérée, il occupe une position dominante semblable a maints égards à celle du parti républicain à la fin du XIXème siècle
