Les Chrétiens du Proche-Orient au temps de la Réforme catholique : Syrie, Liban, Palestine, XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles

Using the roman archives, as well as locale founds, we try to explain the actual influence of the catholic church between the oriental Christians, mainly reguarding their social organisation and their mentality. Thus, we begin with description of the Christian communities in their Islamic context. This communities have their own coherence and contradictions, which determine the effects of western intervention. Then, looking at the European point of view, we study the transition from crusade to mission, the French "protection" on the ottoman Christians, the number, the organisation, the actual methods of the Latin missionaries. In this time appears an oriental catholicism which emphasizes the differences between roman Christians and the traditional oriental context. We observe the catholic way of life, with his particularities : the role of local clergy, in the tridentine princips educated, the education of the laymen, their association in devote societies, their attitude in front of the death and the dangers of the life, the changes in succession and marriage...En nous fondant sur les archives romaines, mais aussi sur des sources locales, nous avons essayé de saisir l'impact réel de l'Eglise romaine, notamment à travers ses missionnaires, sur les mentalités et l'organisation sociale des chrétientés orientales. Pour ce faire, nous sommes partis d'une description des communautés chrétiennes dans un environnement musulman dominant, avec leurs propres cohérences et leurs propres contradictions, qui conditionnent l'intervention occidentale. puis, nous plaçant du point de vue européen, nous avons examiné le passage progressif de la croisade à la mission; le rôle de la protection française sur les chrétiens ottomans; les effectifs, l'organisation les méthodes concrètes des différents ordres missionnaires latins. Nous avons enfin examiné l'émergence d'un catholicisme oriental, en analysant quelques aspects qui différencient les chrétiens attachés à Rome de leur environnement oriental : le rôle d'un clergé local formé aux normes tridentines ; l'alphabétisation des laïcs, leur regroupement en sociétés de dévotion, leur attitude envers la mort et les dangers de la vie; les règles de la succession et du mariage catholiques
