The study relates to adjustments of expenditures, by budget components, when households are facing an important fall of income. It begins with a presentation, in a methodological perspective, of the most important empirical studies on the subject. it goes on with a synthesis of the principal results arising from studies which relate to unemployed and presents the results obtained by the author from two surveys : "conditions de vie" from INSEE (1986) and "enquête socio-économique auprès des ménages lorrains" (1986). Eight components of household’s budget are considered: clothing, leisure, transport, home equipment, food, housing, health, expenditures for children.
